The security industry exists to reduce the psychological and physical threat to people in society; and to diminish the incidence and severity of threats turning into reality and causing harm. Whilst threats may take several forms, they are most generally a person, action or item liable to cause harm.
There are two primary components to a threat:
1. What causes the threat?
2. What is threatened?
Many security industry jobs are focussed on mitigating threats, while others contribute to a greater or lesser extent toward managing security. These include supplying both products and services. They cover policing, legal services, private investigators, consultants and security officers. The security industry also employs a diversity of other people from fencing contractors and security system installers through to locksmiths and safe makers.
Volunteer and lobby groups can exist to contribute to crime prevention; while prison and parole officers, social workers and counsellors are involved with controlling or rehabilitating criminals.
