Starting with the Raw Products
There are hundreds of different herb species. Some of these species have dozens – if not hundreds – of varieties. Each of these varieties has unique characteristics and potential uses. They differ in terms of:
- Their chemical components
- How they affect the human senses – taste, smell, sight
- How they affect the human body in other ways
- How they can contribute toward creating different types of useful products.
Herbal products are generally made from herbs with simple processing, with the intent of maintaining wholeness. The quality of the finished products is highly dependent on the quality of the raw materials used.
Different types of herbal products require different base ingredients. This means that the post-harvest processing techniques will vary according to the type of product being made. In soaps, for instance, oils, infusions, and dried herbs may be most appropriate as fresh herbs may lead to problems with mould. Conversely, fresh herbal products may be sold for culinary uses, some teas, and making infusions.
Processing can yield:
- Extracts
- Decoctions
- Essential oils
- Teas
- Ointments
- Creams
- Tinctures
