Studying Online as an Expat

It is estimated that there are currently nearly 58 million expats worldwide and the figure is rising all of the time.

For example, some Australians are choosing to live abroad. Their most popular destination currently is the UK, with over 180,000 Australians living in the UK. Other popular destinations for Australians are America, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

It is also estimated that 8 million Americans are expats and over 300,000 British expats are living in Europe alone.

What is an expat?

Expat is a shortened version of expatriate. It is a term used to refer to people who live and/or work outside their native country. For example, an Australian person living in Spain would be an expat.

Why People Become an Expat?

The COVID-19 pandemic halted global travel for a while, but as the world is opening up again, more and more people are choosing to live and work abroad.

There are many reasons why people may become expats.

  • They may want to travel and see the world.
  • Work somewhere else in the world. This is the main reason why people leave their native country. Although, this could possibly change as there are increasing opportunities to work remotely.
  • There might be better job opportunities elsewhere.
  • It may be cheaper to live in another country.
  • People may want to broaden their horizons, learn about new cultures, eat different foods and live in a different way.
  • They may not be happy with something about their native country.
  • Some people may become an expat to learn a new language.

Studying as an Expat

Being overseas can be a life changing experience.  You can learn a new language, eat new food, meet new people, expand your horizons and embrace new cultures.  It can be a way to experience new ways of living and working.

Another reason why some people choose to become an expat is that there can be better educational opportunities in other countries.

However, this is not always the case. There can be differing standards in education.

This is where online learning steps up to the plate. With the growth in distance learning, there are still opportunities for expats to study courses from their native country, whilst experiencing a new culture, a new life and different job opportunities in another country.

New research suggests that the online education market will be worth US $350 billion by 2025. This has opened up massive opportunities.

Online learning has many advantages –

New Technology

Before the pandemic, we were seeing rapid changes in the technology available for distance and online learning. The pandemic led to even greater changes as the education industry rushed to provide online education for literally millions of people.

Providers, such as ACS Distance Education, were already at the forefront of educational technology and online courses, and have continued to improve and develop new technology.

Study Anywhere

For expats, another advantage of online learning is that you can study from anywhere in the world. AND you can take your studying with you. So, if you choose to go from Amsterdam to Berlin to London to New York, you can take your course with you and study wherever you are.

You can study on the beach, sitting looking at the mountains or while travelling from one place to another. Online learning is so flexible and convenient.

This means that your education is stable and continuous. There is no need for breaks in education and courses. You can simply study as you travel.

It also means you do not have to keep swapping and changing and can stick with the same education provider. So, whether you want to study for a month or several years, you can carry on studying while you are storing up your experiences of living another life.

Quality Education

Teaching standards vary from country to country, so you may not always be able to find a course or courses that meet your educational expectations.  Online education removes that difficulty. You can choose the education provider that meets your requirements and expectations.  You might choose to study with an education provider where you are currently living, your native country or anywhere in the world really.
